Beowulf.
Beowulf is an epic poem since it celebrates the great actions of its protagonist. This hero is praised highly and his adventures have more than a touch of entertainment: they establish the courtly ideal of the warrior , whose courage, endurance, generosity determine his nobility.
The society described in this poem is heroic, too; a lord in peace and war is the shepherd to his people and the warriors “earn their mead” and their armour by their courage and loyalty in war. Other themes are the sense of the passing of time, the cult of fame and a deep feeling for nature.
The languiage employed in Beowulf is rich and analytical and the style is vigorous aimed at praising the figure of the hero.
The story is a simply one: it dealds with the legend of Beowulf, aq young Scandinavian hero who fi8ghts two gigantic monsters in order to bring happiness to the kingdom of Heorot in Denmark. The final events of the poem take place fifty years later, when Beowulf is the old king of the Geats. The old hero succeds in killing a fire breathing monster but he is mortally wounded and he gives Wiglaf, his young retainer, his dying voice and his armour. The gold he won for his people is people is returned to the ground. No one shall inherit it. The gold and the glory are buried with him
