Poetry means “to create”. it was born as an oral generally accompanied by dancing and music and is the oldest form of literature. The people used it to express the most remarkable events in their lives and to convey the fellings associated with them. The structural units of poetry are the line, the stanza and the canto. The main kinds of poetry are narrative and epic, dramatic, satiric, and lyric.
The most important aspects of Anglo Saxon poetry were stress and alliteration. Each line was divided into two halves by a caesura o break and had four stresses. Alliteration that is the repetition of the same initial consonant sound was used to link the two halves of the line.
